A Song of degrees.

Psalm 126:1 When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream.

turned again the captivity. This psalm may have been written after the Babylonian captivity, but also could well refer to the long siege of Jerusalem by Sennacherib. This was the occasion of God's miraculous deliverance which just preceded the miracle of the sun dial's shadow (Isaiah 37:36-38). The entire psalm is best understood in the context of this great deliverance and the resultant joy of the people.

Psalm 126:2 Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great things for them.

Psalm 126:3 The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.

Psalm 126:4 Turn again our captivity, O LORD, as the streams in the south.

Psalm 126:5 They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.

Psalm 126:6 He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

precious seed. The seed, spiritually speaking, is the word of God (Luke 8:11; 1 Peter 1:23).
