To the chief Musician, even to Jeduthun, A Psalm of David.
Jeduthun. “Jeduthun” means “Choir of Praise.” It occurs also in the titles of Psalms 62 and 77. Jeduthun is also identified as one of David's chief musicians, Ethan, in 1 Chronicles 15:17.
Psalm 39:2 I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.
measure of my days. David, who “died in a good old age” (1 Chronicles 29:28), considered his “days as an handbreadth” (Psalm 39:5). Moses, who lived to age 120 (Deuteronomy 34:7), considered his age “as a tale that is told” (Psalm 90:9). See notes on Psalm 90:4, 10, 12.
Psalm 39:7 And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.
Psalm 39:8 Deliver me from all my transgressions: make me not the reproach of the foolish.
Psalm 39:9 I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it.
Psalm 39:10 Remove thy stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of thine hand.
Psalm 39:13 O spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go hence, and be no more.
