For centuries people believed in spontaneous generation, e.g. that worms came from mud, maggots from rotting meat, etc.. This myth was destroyed by scientists such as Redi and Pasteur. In spite of this, secular evolutionists still insist that life arose by accident, even though no convincing theory has yet been put forward to explain how the great gulf between non-living chemicals and even the simplest living organisms could have been bridged.
Another problem for evolutionists is that the first living organisms were not simple. In some of the lowest rocks — the Cambrian — the fossils show an 'explosion' of complex life-forms. Not only were there advanced invertebrates like starfish with their complex hydraulic system, and trilobites with compound eyes, but also true fish. There is no evidence they had 'simpler' ancestors. Even atheist Dr. Richard Dawkins admits, 'It is as though they were just planted there, without any evolutionary history.'1 Biologist Dr. Gary Parker — a creationist — says, 'It is hard to imagine how absolutely crushing this evidence is for evolution.'2

Scientists are a long way from being able to create life in the laboratory. However, if they ever did, it would only be after a great deal of research and intelligent input. It would actually prove that life needs an Intelligent Creator!

The Biblical account of origins tells us that in the beginning living organisms were created by God 'according to their kinds'. We are all familiar with the 'dog kind': there are several hundred different varieties, but all of them remain dogs. This indicates that the dog kind was created with a rich gene pool. The creation model, therefore, pictures life as an 'orchard' of separate bushes, each representing a created kind. The evolution model, by contrast, pictures a single 'tree', where all living things have descended from the same common ancestor over millions of years. Which model is supported by the available evidence?
THE FOSSIL RECORD
Many people believe that the fossil record supports the evolution model. Nothing could be further from the truth! Ever since Darwin's day, evolutionists have been frustrated because the transitional forms demanded by their theory have not turned up. Why are there no fossils of fish growing legs and evolving into amphibians, reptiles growing wings and feathers and becoming birds, or land mammals turning into whales? From time to time there have been claims that a 'missing link' has been discovered, but these claims have not been borne out by further examination.
Do we observe evolution happening in the living world? We certainly see natural selection at work, but this is not the same as evolution. Natural selection is responsible for the different varieties we find, but it has limits: you can only select from the genetic information that is already present. It can rearrange it, but cannot introduce anything new. So we can breed large dogs and small dogs, long-haired and short-haired dogs, dogs with floppy ears and straight ears, but they will always be dogs. The same can be said for all other living organisms. We see natural selection at work, but not evolution!
In order to have evolution there has to be some way to get new genetic information. What about mutations (genetic mistakes)? Could they have been the mechanism? It seems that the answer has to be 'no'. Israeli scientist Dr Lee Spetner has researched this matter, and writes: 'Not even one mutation has been observed that adds a little information to the genome.'1 Most mutations cause a loss of information, though a few reshuffle what is already there. Mutations may be 'beneficial' if they help an animal to survive better, e.g. some insects on windswept islands have lost their wings. This stops them being blown into the sea — but they have also lost the information for wings, so their descendants will never be able to grow wings in the future. Without new information, evolution is a non-starter.

We should never accept something simply because someone else tells us it's true. Yet most people seem to accept evolution unquestionably because this is what they have heard at school or on TV. One of the principles of true science is to test everything rigorously. In this leaflet we have invited you to weigh the evidence for and against evolution, and we believe that evolution fails the test. If you're still not convinced, why not examine this issue more closely?
If evolution isn't true, then we are not the result of a series of chance events over millions of years. Life on earth — including human beings — must have been created for a purpose by a supernatural Being. And if there is a God, then we must be answerable to Him in some way. Don't just take our word for it, though — check it out for yourself. Millions of people around the world have done just that, and discovered that there is a God. God has given us a book — the Bible — which tells us how we can know Him, if we really want to. It tells us the truth about ourselves — we have all broken God's laws and are guilty in His sight. But we also learn that God loves us and has come to us in the Person of Jesus Christ. 'Anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.' (Hebrews 11:6b).
We would encourage you to find out more about Christianity, and the solid, historical evidence for the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He promised: 'Seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.' (Matthew 7:7).
