Title Pic: What is the 'elephant in the living room?'

U.S. newspaper columnist George V. Caylor described a meeting he had with a molecular biologist who specialized in genetic research.* Caylor asked him if he believed that genetic information had evolved. The scientist replied, “George, nobody I know in my profession truly believes it evolved. It was engineered by 'genius beyond genius', and such information could not have been written any other way.” Caylor then asked him if he had stated this publicly. The scientist admitted that he hadn't, and that if he did “I'd be out of a job, or relegated to the outer fringes where I couldn't earn a decent living.”

The scientist (whose identity was not revealed) went on to say, “we have to live with the 'elephant in the living room'.”

“What elephant?” Caylor enquired.

“Design”, replied the scientist. “It's like the elephant in the living room. It moves around, takes up an enormous amount of space, loudly trumpets, bumps into us, knocks things over, eats a ton of hay, and smells like an elephant. And yet we have to swear it isn't there!”

Title Pic: A Richard Dawkins Quote

Picture of an ElephantWe invite you to consider just a few of hundreds of examples of design which refute an evolutionary explanation and point to the work of a “genius”.

Picture of a Giraffe Standing TallWhy drinking giraffes don't get headaches is a big headache for evolutionists

The Giraffe is the tallest animal on earth, standing about 18 feet (5.5 metres) tall. In order to keep its brain well supplied with blood, the giraffe is equipped with an extra large heart. It also has very high blood pressure — about twice that of any other creature. This is fine while the giraffe is walking upright, but what about when it goes to a waterhole, and puts its head down to have a drink? Why doesn't the blood rush to its head and give it a brain haemorrhage?

Picture of a Giraffe Stooping to DrinkThis doesn't happen, because the giraffe has special valves in the jugular vein of its neck. When it bends its head, these valves close to prevent a rush of blood to its brain. In fact, the giraffe's blood pressure actually falls as it lowers its head. As an extra safeguard, there is spongy tissue at the base of its brain to soak up surplus blood. When the giraffe straightens its neck again, the valves re-open, and the spongy tissue releases the extra blood.

Giraffes couldn't survive without this special 'plumbing', so they must have always had this equipment. This clever and very effective design points to the work of a wise, all-powerful Creator. It couldn't have evolved gradually. In any case, the fossils show that giraffes have always been giraffes, with no evidence that they descended from something with a shorter neck.

Title Pic: The Orchid that Tricks the Wasp

The Drakaea Orchid depends on one type of wasp for its survival. The female wasps are wingless, and live underground, but during the mating season they emerge, climb a tree, and send out hormones to attract male wasps. A male wasp then grabs a female, and carries her away for mating. Drakaea Orchids have a heart-shaped leaf which looks and smells like a wingless female wasp. So male wasps, looking for a mate, land on this leaf, mistake it for a female, and try to carry it away. As the wasp struggles, and a hinged mechanism tips the wasp upside down and brushes pollen on to its back. The wasp eventually gives up and flies away. If it finds another flower, it is again deceived, and this time the pollen from the first flower is left behind.

Gradual evolutionary changes can't even begin to explain the origin of the Drakaea Orchid and the amazing partnership it has with these wasps. In order to get pollinated, the orchid would have had to develop leaf that looked and smelled like a female of this one species of wasp. It would also have had to develop a hinge in just the right place so that the struggling male wasp was brought into contact with the pollen. Remember, these devices would have to be working perfectly right from the start, otherwise there would be no Drakaea Orchids! Purposeful design by an all-wise, intelligent Creator is the only reasonable explanation for the origin and survival of this remarkable flower.

Title Pic: The Hidden World

Powerful electron microscopes have revealed a hidden world which Darwin knew nothing about — molecular machines which are so minute that evolutionists have not even attempted to explain their origin. The knowledge about the incredible complexity of living systems has destroyed the popular view that everything can be explained by gradual evolutionary change.

Darwin's Theory has broken down!

Picture of Charles Darwin“If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down.” — Charles Darwin, 'The Origin of Species', 1859.

We all recognize design when we see it!

Picture of the Four Presidents Carved Into Mount RushmoreNo one would ever believe that the faces of four US presidents, carved into the rock face at Mount Rushmore, were formed by natural processes, e.g. wind, rain and frost. They clearly demonstrate design. Yet this sculpture is simple compared with the smallest living organism.

“Biologists must constantly keep in mind that what they see was not designed, but rather evolved.” — Dr. Francis Crick, What Mad Pursuit, New York: Basic Books (1988), p. 138.

We all recognize design when we see it, and can easily distinguish between a designed object such as a statue, and a naturally occurring object like a rock. The evidence for design in nature is so compelling that secular scientists have to force themselves to deny it, as the above quote reveals. However, more and more scientists are admitting that they can't ignore “the elephant in the living-room.” Evolution simply can't account for the incredible complexity of the living world; intelligent design is the only reasonable explanation.

The Bible — often written off as out of date — actually stated this: “Since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20).

The Bible gives us additional information about the identity of the Creator, about ourselves, and the world we live in. It reveals that God is no distant impersonal “life-force”, but that He loves us all, and wants us to know Him. “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16). God has gone to great lengths to reveal Himself. Why don't you find out more?
